Checking In: Aman Kyoto opens its doors

Aman’s third Japanese property is breathtaking – set inside a secret garden for the ultimate serene stay. Stone pathways lead guests through the forest floor and to the arrival pavilion to check in.

From here, guests are taken to one of the 26 rooms, based on traditional ‘ryokan inns’, complete with tatami may floors, monochrome scroll paintings, Japanese baths and views out on to the forest surrounds.

The peaceful ambience continues in the resort’s Aman spa, where traditional ‘onsen’ bathing can be taken before choosing from the treatments which make the most of the local products, including Kyoto green tea, tanba kuromame black beans, sake and cold-pressed camellia oil.

To unwind, guests can opt for a private yoga session in the gardens or a shiatsu massage to release stresses, or for the ultimate chill, the one-day mindfulness which includes the signature spa journey, a two-hour hike and hilltop meditation, can’t be missed.

Back at the hotel, afternoon tea includes the delicate flower-like wagashi, traditional mochi, anko and fruit-based confections served with Kyoto Matcha, while home-cooked Kyoto classics and Western dishes are served in the Living Pavilion.
