Transformational experiences abound: An Interview with Jennifer Attersall

You can find them under the enchanting dance of the northern lights in the North, at the top of a towering mountain in the West, between floating icebergs on the open waters of the Atlantic in the East or tucked between the grape vines, in Canada’s luscious wine country, of its South.  So, if you’re looking to create truly inspiring incentives, look no further than Canada.

Canada - Like no other

“Canada is different. And not just from other countries – even within Canada, there’s such variety. It’s so special”

Jennifer Attersall is Destination Canada’s acting Senior Director of Business Events and, during her time with the organisation, implemented a global incentive strategy – showcasing Canada’s vast and varied offerings to the world.

“I was drawn to the role as it provided me the opportunity to share the unique stories of each of our partners. There are so many amazing people, cultures and destinations in Canada – and it’s an honour to represent them on a global stage.”

The world’s second largest country is made up of 10 provinces and 3 territories – each with their own distinct qualities and offerings for incentive groups.

“When hosting international guests, I’ve had the opportunity to experience a range of what Canada can provide, from coast to coast to coast, and I can honestly say that each time was different. For example, we recently brought a group to Clayoquot Wilderness Resort in British Columbia. After a breathtaking helicopter flight above the mountains surrounding the lodge, we landed on top of a peak and – under the guidance of a wellness professional – undertook a polar dip in an alpine lake”.

This was intimidating at first but, following the kind encouragement of their guide and inspiration from the stunning surroundings, Jennifer and her guests took the plunge.

“It was incredible! We pushed our limits and went away with a memory that we’ll never forget.”

But as previously alluded to, this was just one excursion – in one destination.

“When you can compare that to other experiences, you realize just how diverse Canada is. On the other side of the country – off the coast of St. John’s – for instance, we took a boat out and watched as local experts dove into the Atlantic waters and surfaced with fresh scallops. We later enjoyed these three ways (raw, as ceviche and grilled) on a private beach, as the sun slipped behind the horizon.”

It’s about the people

“The one takeaway from all of our attendees was that they left feeling as thought they’d made a new friend.”

Referring to an event that Destination Canada recently hosted, Jennifer highlights how the openness of the people in Canada helps to separate it from other incentive destinations.

“You’ll be welcomed by people with open arms. Everywhere you take groups, you meet these amazing characters – each with their own story – who create these unique experiences for incentive winners. When we hosted Incentive Canada Winter in Québec City, for example, we had this unbelievable guide on our ice climbing excursion.”

François Guy Thivierge, who is one of the rare individuals to have conquered the highest peak in each continent and skied both the North and South Poles, led the group.  And he came bearing gifts.

“He brought some homemade cheese and hot chocolate with him. So, when it came time to eat, we sat and chatted with this inspiring adventurer, enjoying his delicious food, on the side of an ice wall. I couldn’t believe it!”

Exceeding Expectations

“I often hear people say that Canada surprised them. They come in with high expectations and still leave feeling blown away.”

Due to the diversity of its offerings, Canada has the ability to wow groups in ways that they never would have thought.

“A trip to the Rocky Mountains might excite the thrill-seekers of your group, but it may be the cultural connection with their Cree guide on an Indigenous medicinal walk that really leaves its mark on them. Or maybe you have wildlife enthusiasts in your group who can’t wait to see the polar bears in the North. There’s a good chance that it’s the otherworldly experience of witnessing the northern lights that defines their time here.”
